John 3: A Master's Class in Cosmology

Yeshua Jesus and Nicodemus: A Master's Class in Cosmology

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

(Joh 3:16)

John Chapter 3 - The Center of the Bible
--
and All Creation!

All Christians can agree that John 3:16 is the very core of all Scriptures. In one short verse, Yeshua Jesus succinctly compacted everything he did into one verse. It is universally known throughout all cultures.

Yet it is only a sound-bite to the entire conversation Yeshua Jesus had with Nicodemus. He was instructing "a teacher of Israel" in Cosmology, the meaing of everything. Yet the influence of this one verse, John 3:16, has totally skewed our perception of what Yeshua Jesus was teaching Nicodemus: Cosmology - the study of existence itself!

John opens his book of John with 1:1-14 as a retelling of Genesis 1. In this passage, John has placed the meaning of the Genesis 1 creation story in the context of the true dual nature of our world.

John 1:1-14

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. (Joh 1:1-14)

Take note of the bolded words. We read this passage and apply Spirituality to it, which is certainly the main point. Yet the construction of this passage is specifically mimicking Genesis 1! Let's look at them side by side and compare the two with bolded words:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

(Gen 1:1-4)

The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the life of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

(Joh 1:1-2

It seems obvious that John is retelling this to emphasize Yeshua Jesus' SPIRITUAL mission to earth. Right? Obvious!

And yet, let us look at what has happened to Evangelical Christianity's interpretation of Genesis 1 over the last hundred years. If we agree that Yeshua Jesus was speaking of Cosmology, the study of existence, then should not the same be applied to how we view the Genesis Creation account? The whole Creation/Evolution Cultural War has been waged largely by Evangelicals to "defend" Genesis 1employing their own brand of Darwinian evolution-Arianism! Just as Arius begat heresy by severing the "body" of Christ from the Godhood, so Evangelical Christians, in a pure-hearted attempt at "protecting" Genesis 1 from Darwinian Evolution, via a 24/7 creation account, has separated the Creation Account from its Spiritual underpinnings!

Interpreting Genesis 1 in defense of of Evolution is fighting the wrong battle, with the wrong troops, for the wrong reason. It takes our eyes off the purpose of creation, and off the author of that creation. The result is the Genesis creations story is shaped into a pseudoscientific 24 hours / 7 day narrative that has nothing to do with the actual purpose of the Genesis story!
